Nothing Like California
By VT
Last year, I conducted a social experiment on people at my school. For a twelve month period, I impersonated the nation’s typical republican in the most liberal state of all, California. Like many of you may have suspected, I wasn’t treated well. Though my conclusion was just as I had anticipated, it lead me to the ultimate question:
What do liberals (or democrats in general) stand for?
Many, including one of Washington’s delegates, Chad Lupkes, claim the parties stand for “justice for all.” Meaning everyone should be looked at equally despite their beliefs. With this knowledge in mind, I’d like to walk you through some of the major milestones of this investigation.
Known liberals, who look to reform what the democratic party is doing incorrectly, wouldn’t even talk to me. One, being one of my closest friends at the time, hated me. It was the biggest contradiction I’ve witnessed in my life! In another instance, I had a well liked teacher suppress me and proceed to laugh at my views.
California is all about accepting the views that aren’t yours and letting others express themselves, but if you are simply from another political party that rule suddenly doesn’t apply to you? For those of you claiming that embracing those of a different culture is any different than undertaking a fellow American of another political party, let me brief you. We allow those who want us to conform to their ways in our country day in and day out, yet these parties profess it’s their “different culture.”
Nevertheless, they overlook a crucial flaw. America is made up of uniquely different cultures, including even those who were brought up in America. Isn’t it fair to say someone who grew up in a southern state has a different way of living than one who lives in the west?
Overall, the study allowed me to discover what party I truly belong to and the discrimination that follows with the group you choose. I hope one day everyone in this world can.
