Over the last couple of years, the electric vehicle (EV) market has experienced positive growth with 2,33,971 units of EV sold in 2021 alone. The electric two-wheeler (E2W) category in India also registered a whopping 425% growth.[1] This clearly indicates that the new India is going electric. With the government setting an ambitious target of 80% E2W penetration by 2030[2], the Indian E2W market is witnessing a surge in demand like never before.

When it comes to personal mobility, the Indian customer is leaning towards electric scooters for many reasons — sky-high fuel prices, government subsidies and low running costs for EVs, fall in battery prices, and an overall desire to go green. This rise in demand has attracted more E2W manufacturers in the Indian market and one of the latest players to throw their hat in the EV ring is Bounce.

A unique blend of ownership and subscription models

Bounce is a Bengaluru-based e-mobility startup that has recently launched an e-scooter — the Bounce Infinity E1 which offers customers a unique blend of both ownership and subscription models. The E1 is a first-of-its-kind e-scooter that comes with a smart Li-ion battery that can be removed from the vehicle and this is what sets it apart from its competitors. The innovation of removable batteries has enabled Bounce to offer a ‘battery as a service’ option. With this model, Bounce is giving the customers the freedom to choose whether they would like to purchase the E1 with a battery or without one, making it highly affordable for the common Indian rider. If customers opt for the ownership model wherein, they buy the e-scooter with the battery, there is still an advantage that they can easily remove the battery and charge it anywhere in their home by simply plugging it into any socket. This gives customers the convenience of charging as per their discretion and requirement.

Under the ‘battery as a service’ model, customers will only buy the scooter and can use Bounce’s battery swapping network of stations to easily exchange an empty battery for a fully-charged one. This option makes the customer’s life more hassle-free as they no longer have to worry about charging and maintenance of batteries making their purchase at least 40% more affordable as compared to the battery-equipped vehicle.

The Bounce Infinity E1 comes at a competitive price tag of INR 68,999 (ex-showroom, Delhi) if the customer wants to buy the e-scooter with the battery. The ‘battery as a service’ model of E1 is priced at INR 45,099 (ex-showroom, Delhi). When customers choose this option, they can go for a battery-as-a-service monthly subscription of INR 1,249 for all their battery needs. Alternatively, the customers can locate their nearest Bounce swapping station on the Bounce app and swap batteries for INR 35 per swap.

With these different ownership models, the company has given #PowerToThePeople to choose the option that suits them the most. The flexible ownership models and affordable prices will enable more Indian riders to move from ICE to EVs making e-mobility mainstream in India.
