It’s important that your website can be found on search engines. Consider when you Google something, and all the steps you take to find what you’re looking for. Keep this in mind as you write your website.

Here are a few best practices to make your website searchable:

Create original content for each page of your site.
Search engines value high quality, original content.

Write in your own voice, while including ready to search keywords that your customers would use to search for your business.

Think, “if I were looking for my product, what would I search for”? Use those same search terms throughout the content on your web site.

Use a certain amount of words per page.
Attract more visitors as your potential customers search for phrases that may have answers on your site. We recommend having at least 250–400 words on each of your site pages, but do not make your site too busy.

There’s a fine line between too few words and too many…this is too many.

Update your information regularly.
Creating fresh content, like a new blog post or FAQ page, increases your search-ability. The more often your website is updated, the more often search engines arrange your site ranking. Updating content frequently increase your chances of getting a higher ranking (like showing up on the first page instead of the fourth page of search results).

It’s in your best interest to create new, quality content on a regular basis.

Pay attention to your header and footer.
A header is the large, bold text at the beginning of a web page that gives you a summary of what you are about to read.

Someone searching for great customer service would be happy to have found this website.

Each of your website pages should have a unique header and subsequent paragraph text below them. The heading describes the content on the page to help search engines understand what the page is about. You can also use the same keywords that you thought of at the beginning of this article to drive the point home.

“To be Googleable” is a great way to drive new people to your website. What search engines look for is a consistent, clean message. Through small text updates, you can increase your chances highly of ranking well.
