Our Caucasian Ovcharka mountain dog dam had 9 puppies this morning, the day of the solar eclipse. In fact the last one was born when the eclipse was in totality which rendered our town pitch black for a minute or two.

Earlier in the day, I watched a promo show on one of the local news channels called Made in Vermont, showcasing Vermont artisan jewelry, t-shirts, insulated coffee cups, baseball caps and the like. You had to be from Vermont and your materials also had to be from Vermont. How can a plastic baseball cap be from Vermont, I asked myself.

I had to laugh. Here in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont we have the most Made in Vermont items there are: A Vermont dog who gave birth to Vermont puppies on a Vermont Farm during the Eclipse.

The eclipse begins — looking from our porch.

No, the pregnancy wasn’t planned — how can you plan that? — but long after tourist t- shirts fade and eclipse jewelry is consigned to the jewelry box, these puppies will thrive and grow into large protective purebreds and their special birth date will always be easy to remember.

Russian Mountain Dogs or Russian Shepherds as they are commonly called make wonderful family pets. In addition to being highly intelligent, they are loyal, protective and loving. They like to lay in doorways to protect entrances and will not let anyone into the house without your say so.

If you would like to visit these wonderful canines, and perhaps plan to take one home, please let us know. We’re Tim and Cheryl from Barton, VT. Both parents live on our farm and are purebred with papers. 802–473–8010.
