I am Too Insulated

My echo chamber became very apparent today

I have spent a lot of time curating my social media feeds.

I am so tired of people being hateful towards people who are different, who are historically marginalized and vulnerable, who are poor, or who just don’t look or behave like the majority population.

As a result, I’ve been pretty ruthless about cutting out extremist rhetoric, especially those people who have strayed into fascism and outright hate. This has extended to those who are on the hard right, and who have helped to elect a convicted felon who brags about sexually assaulting women and supports people who call an entire island under his responsibility an “island of garbage”.

I’m scared and worried about my friends in the US, particularly those who are not white men…but I’m also not sure that I should be writing about that right now, or at all if I want to travel to the US.

What scares me more is that I genuinely didn’t see this result coming. Everything I saw on my social media feeds (which is limited thanks to the ongoing dispute about equitable distribution of advertising funds) was that this would be a close race but that there was no way the US would elect the man whose promises sound a lot like the ones that got Hitler elected.
