I Think I’ve Out-Grown Social Media
A Gen X rant about social stupidity, political bullshit and sell-outs
Back in the late ’80s and ’90s, we were the generation that didn’t give a shit about fitting in. We grew up on a steady diet of irony, sarcasm, and a healthy distrust of anything mainstream. We rolled our eyes at corporate greed, laughed in the face of authority, and scoffed at the very idea of selling out.
We were the latchkey kids who grew up watching “Beavis and Butt-Head” and blasting Metallica while we slouched in our flannel shirts, convinced that the world was just one big joke and we were in on it.
We were too cool to care, and that’s exactly what set us apart.
But fast forward to today, and it feels like the world has gone completely mad. Social media has turned everyone into some kind of digital zombie, mindlessly scrolling, posting, and arguing over things that we used to know better than to give a damn about.
We were the generation that knew how to say, “Whatever,” and move on with our lives. We didn’t worship politicians; we saw them for what they were — just another part of the machine. We didn’t trust the suits on TV; we knew they were just trying to sell us something. We were all about authenticity, but now, it seems like everyone’s sold out to the…
