In his famous essay, “Why I Write,” George Orwell describes why he decided to become a writer.

His fourth reason reads like this:

Political purpose — using the word ‘political’ in the widest possible sense. Desire to push the world in a certain direction, to alter other people’s idea of the kind of society that they should strive after. Once again, no book is genuinely free from political bias. The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude.

He limits his definition of politics to that of art. Yet, his definition still is too narrowly defined. Everything is politics. Everything we do, say, eat, drink, love, hate, purchase, and spend our time with is inherently an act of politics. Even those who claim to be apolitical are still a cog in a political machine.

For example, let’s say you are going to the grocery store. You decide to drive to the store because it is too far to walk. That simple act of getting into your car and driving to the store is loaded with the repercussions of political decisions.
