I always struggle to write these recaps because I know so many people are sharing their progress, and it feels intimidating to share my stats alongside some of the greats on this platform.

I truly get motivated by some of the other writers on this platform because of their incredible success and the earnings they have been able to generate. I question the value I can add when I have not experienced success like other writers but I have decided that maybe my slower progress and completely on this earth earnings can provide a perspective that differs from the rest. Without further ado, let’s delve into my stats for the month of January, and I will share some of my observations.

Followers

My follower count is something I greatly appreciate and yet try to pay less and less attention to. When I first started on Medium, I was obsessed with this number, and I was guilty of superficial behavior. I will turn myself in as someone who thought the follow-for-follow was the norm and necessary to grow my follower base quickly. While from a merely numbers perspective, this may have worked, it did not attract readers or people actually interested in what I had to say. My follower count quickly became artificially inflated, and it does not indicate my success or the value of my writing.

While all the most successful writers on this platform do have a high follower count, the quality of these followers is tremendously more impactful than the actual number. With me sitting at a little over 2.6k followers, I know that is higher than others on this platform who earn significantly more and yet have fewer followers. The follow-for-follow I engaged in early on gained me plenty of dormant followers who have probably never even read my work.

Below is my follower count and how many I have gained in January. In January, I really tried to focus on genuine connections. My goal is to be as outspoken as possible about the value other writers provide me and how much I appreciate their work. There are so many unique and impactful voices on this platform, and that is something I truly love about Medium. I routinely spend 10 to 12 hours a day reading others' stories and commenting when I see fit. I know how much I appreciate a kind word, and I try to provide support and positivity to as many people as possible.

Followers gained: 606

As you can see, I gained 606 followers, and while this isn’t the most I’ve gained in a month, I am thrilled with this number as I believe it should contain a higher percentage of followers who will actually engage with my work. Thank you to each and every one of you who chose to follow me, and a special thanks to those who routinely read my writing.

Email Subscribers gained: 12

Email subscribers

I find the number of email subscribers to be more directly correlated with the number of reads than the number of followers. It says something about your work when someone clicks a button saying they want your stories sent directly to their email. Gaining the trust of someone enough for your work to go straight to their email is a much more personal commitment than a mere follow. Most people guard their email tightly because if you’re not careful, your email account can quickly become overrun with spam and useless content. I gained 12 subscribers, and I am happy with this number. I know it is by no means a huge amount, but every one of those 12 gained is motivation, and I am grateful.

Earnings

Earnings are the figures most people obsess over and for just cause. Nothing is more impactful than the amount of cash your stories generate. While followers and email subscribers are numbers on a screen, earnings are much more tangible as you can see them directly hit your bank account. January was my most successful yet on this platform, and I’m hoping this is a trend I can continue. I finally cracked the elusive $ 100-a-month club, and I am ecstatic. Again, I know this is not much compared to other writers, but I am personally satisfied and happy with the figure. It has been a figure I have been striving for for a few months, and I am glad to have reached it. My earnings for the month of January were $105.10.

My highest earning story for the month was (Recommended Stories) How To Take Your Medium Writing To The Next Level. This story earned me $8.30. I am not surprised that this was my highest-earning story because it is the one I have pinned to my profile. Keeping this story at the top of my profile all month long clearly made it more visible than any other article I wrote. It is also on the topic of writing on Medium, so this automatically gives it a wide target audience.

Reads

This is the bread and butter of everything else on Medium. Reads is single-handedly the most important stat on Medium. It doesn’t matter what your goals are, reads is a critical number. Whether your goal is to impact people, change people's points of view, earn some side income, or anything else, the number of reads is what matters.

For the month of January, I had 960 people read my articles. With 2100 views, my overall read percentage is roughly 46%. The most reads I gained in 1 day were 90, and the lowest is 13. I am extremely satisfied with this number. I tend to write long articles that are above 7 minutes in length, so naturally, my read percentage will be lower than if I focused on shorter-form content. I am not sure what a good read percentage is, but from my research on the topic, anything between 40 and 80 percent is considered acceptable. Obviously, over 80 percent is considered incredible, but I have not seen any credible info on maintaining higher than 80 percent.

Overall, January was an incredible month and was the motivation I needed. I am happy to be on an upward trajectory and optimistic that this trend will continue. I truly appreciate all the people I have had the opportunity to meet and am thankful to everyone who took the time to read my work. I look forward to many more months on Medium and am excited about all the great articles I will have the privilege to read. The Medium community is something special, and it takes each and every one of us to make it the place to be. Please strive to add as much value and positivity to this platform as possible, and don’t let this community become a place where negativity and hostility are tolerated. We are lucky to have an amazing community of writers and readers. Thanks again to everyone.
