We’ve Outdone Ourselves

And we should be ashamed of that

Sigh, what a strange time to be alive. It’s 2023, we have discovered almost all the solutions to make human life easy — self-driving vehicles, instant messaging, instant delivery alternatives, telemedicine, smart home integration, and artificial intelligence.

You’d think with all this cool stuff, we’d have a bit more heart, right? But nope.

Zilch.

Nada.

I mean, just look around. We’ve got this wicked tech at our fingertips, yet we’re so caught up in our own little worlds, racing to make things easier for ourselves, that we’ve forgotten how to be there for one another.

We literally have zero sensitivity, empathy, acceptance, and tolerance towards certain genders, sexualities, races, religions, and anything that does not align with ancient “traditions and rituals”. It’s like we’re all in our own bubbles, not giving a hoot about the people right next to us.

So, we’ve truly outdone ourselves, haven’t we? Amidst all these cutting-edge gizmos and gadgets, it’s like we’ve hit a roadblock in our hearts — and nobody has the faintest idea how to navigate around it, or even better, obliterate it completely.

This just reflects how increasingly selfish we have all become. We are always chasing the next big thing that will make our lives even easier, but we keep forgetting to discover, learn, and create acceptance for the changing world around us. Heck, we don’t even take a moment to learn about each other, forget about the world!

I had a wake-up call last week when I reached out to a colleague who seemed down in the dumps. So, I sent her a chat asking if she’s doing okay, and that if she needs anything, she can reach out to me anytime.

And guess what? Her first reaction was how grateful she was that I asked because I was the only one to have reached out. Can you believe that? In a company jam-packed with 200+ souls, not a single one thought to say, “Hey, are you okay? I’m here if you need me.” And that hit me SO hard.

But this just isn’t about a company. This is, unfortunately, everywhere — we’re all guilty of this same self-absorbed attitude. Day by day, we’re losing touch with what’s really happening, and we’re becoming more and more intolerant of anything different from our own little bubble.

And ever since, my thoughts feel heavy, contemplating what lies ahead. What kind of world are we leaving for our kids and the next generation? What example are we setting? It’s terrifying to think that they might inherit this mess we’ve created, and the huge amount of work they’d have to do to correct it all.

We’ve got to do better, folks. We’ve got to step out of our comfort zones and start giving a damn about each other. It’s high time we set a different example for the generations to come. Because, honestly, we owe it to them.

It’s 2023, and yet, we have a lot of soul-searching to do.
