My anecdotal experience

Now that Donald Trump will soon be our next president, it’s inevitable that at least some of the undocumented among us will be deported. Which would be a good thing if I were convinced that they commit crimes more frequently than our very own citizens. I have my doubts.

For the past three years, I’ve been moonlighting in New York City as a food delivery guy for DoorDash. I am American-born, college-educated, and 74 years of age. I do not need the work financially. But as I watched the industry blossom in my neighborhood during the pandemic, I grew curious about the biz — and the people who were risking their lives doing the job.

One day on a lark, I applied for employment online with DoorDash and was hired one hour later! Somewhat befuddled at the rapidity with which I was suddenly employed, I, with caution, logged onto Youtube and found a 12-minute video instructing me on how to navigate the DoorDash app before jumping into the deep end. Oddly, the company itself had offered no orientation when hiring me.

After watching the video, I downloaded the app on my phone and turned it on. Within 30 seconds, my phone lit up with a job.

Ya gotta be kidding me. That fast?!?!
