Poverty Kills
American Healthcare is a Scam
Another rant about the healthcare ripoff
Poverty is a leading killer of Americans. Did you know that poverty is the 4th leading cause of death in the USA? A University of California, Riverside, (UCR) paper published April 2023, in the Journal of the American Medical Association drew connections from poverty with an estimated 183,000 deaths in America among people 15 years and older on statistics from 2019.
Only heart disease, cancer, and smoking were associated with a greater number of deaths than poverty. Obesity, diabetes, drug overdoses, suicides, firearms, and homicides, among other common causes of death, were less lethal than poverty. [UCR Riverside News]
What it looks like to be working poor
The working poor who don’t amass huge debt are still up to our eyeballs in the cost of living. For example: Hamid and I don’t go out to restaurants or movies. I haven’t even been inside a mall since before my medical crisis back in 2018. We rarely buy new clothes; it’s more likely we’ll turn to thrift stores if something is needed.
