Anti-Trans Bathroom Bills are Going to Backfire Spectacularly

And why that poses a challenge for progressives and conservatives alike

Shortly before Thanksgiving, Ohio governor Mike DeWine signed a law that prohibits people from entering a bathroom or changing room that doesn’t correspond to their sex assigned at birth, at any K through 12 public education facility, as well as any public college or university.

Similar “bathroom bills” targeting transgender individuals have been passed in fourteen states, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Back in May, Mississippi governor Tate Reeves signed his own state’s version of the bill, saying:

It’s mind blowing that this is what Joe Biden’s America has come to. Having to pass common sense policies that protect women’s spaces was unimaginable a few years ago. But here we are … we have to pass a law to protect women in bathrooms, sororities, locker rooms, dressing rooms, shower rooms, and more.

With all due respect to Reeves, I don’t think the “common sense” policy he enacted is going to have “common sense” consequences. For example, let’s imagine you are one of these women in a bathroom, locker room, or shower room, and in walks a man.
