This incident occurred a few days ago when a local man from Bihar, India, was bitten by a snake while working. The man, Santosh Lahor, was part of a railway team that was laying train tracks in a thickly forested part of Rajauli in Bihar.

After a long day of work, Santosh and his team decided to go rest at one of their camps. As the man was settling down to sleep, he was bitten by a venomous snake.

Lohar quickly realized what had happened and reacted by biting the snake back. He believed in the local myth, i.e., biting a venomous snake back will transfer the venom back into its body. He bit the snake twice, just to be sure.

Ironically, the snake died after getting bitten, and Santosh was rushed to the hospital by his friends. He was treated overnight and was safely discharged from the hospital the next day.

The doctor who treated Santosh, Dr. Satish Chandra Sinha, says that it is still not clear which type of snake bit him.

How local myths effect us:

As someone from Pakistan, local myths and stories still play a big part in our culture, especially around rural areas. While most people tend to respect and only listen to these things, some people take them a bit too seriously.

I have met very literate people who study at top universities or have decent jobs, but they still wholeheartedly believe in these myths. Some people refuse to see a doctor when they are sick and instead rely on traditional remedies that have not been scientifically proven.

I believe that there is nothing wrong with respecting our local beliefs and myths since they are an integral part of our culture. However, it is essential that we move forward through science and innovation, as that allows us to progress in not one but, many fields of life.
