I was working when the verdict came down. My cellphone dinged at me, a message from my good friend, who has been home ill and thus watching way more MSNBC than she probably should.

She simply messaged this: “Guilty!!!!”

I dropped everything. I work from home, so that does have its advantages. I left “work” downstairs and went upstairs to turn on MSNBC. I watched Rachel Maddow (who must have been hovering near the studio all day waiting for the Bat signal) who had popped in to join Nicolle Wallace on her show to discuss the breaking news.

Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts!

I only watched MSNBC briefly, however. Nicolle, Rachel, and the many other pundits who piled into the studio (I guess they had all been hovering for the Bat signal) were so damn somber and serious.

I wanted party hats, noise makers, confetti, and dancing!

Typical of Rachel, however, she was quite the studious buzz kill, going on and on about how the Republicans were attacking and undermining our judicial system. She talked about how delegitimizing the courts is essential for an aspiring autocrat, and America is thus facing the gravest of threats as so many GOP leaders echo Trump’s talking points…
