Could This Be a Revolution of the Old?
What does it mean that the anti-Trump movement is graying?
So I went to the April 5th “Hands Off” anti-Trump protest in my town. I’m glad I did! I saw some fun signs (I especially liked “They’re eating the checks, they’re eating the balances” and the elegantly understated ”I preferred democracy”). More importantly, I felt for once that the country I live in isn’t necessarily going insane.
It was nice to know that thousands of other people in my don’t-rock-the-boat midwestern city felt strongly enough about our dire situation to turn out and chant slogans in the pouring rain. And it was doubly nice to come home and see the videos and pictures from similar protests all over the country.
It feels like a real resistance is building, and that’s important. We have few avenues to stop this train before it runs off a cliff. We can bombard our members of Congress with demands that they act like a coequal branch of government, and we can get out in the streets. That’s about it, at least until the midterm elections roll around.
Trump and Fox News will, of course, either ignore the protests or publicly dismiss them as some kind of George Soros paid-actor mob of woke trans snowflakes (as I write this, they seem to be choosing the former; the protests, which are one of the top…
