Do ghosts exist?

Have you ever seen one? This isn’t rhetorical. This is a question that I want an answer to.

About 3 years ago, there was a sharp bloodcurdling scream in my house. It was from my daughter’s former nanny. I ran the short distance from my room to the sitting room and arrived at the same time as the nanny’s friend who usually came by so they walk home together:

“I saw something. It passed quickly and went into the wall”

For a moment, I stared angrily at her. What nonsense? Are you serious right now? Is this drama?

Questions my stern glare asked.

I sighed and turned to walk away when to my surprise, her friend said:

“I thought it was silly but the other day, I swear I saw something. But it moved quickly and disappeared”

Now they had my attention.

What?

They both swore they were serious.

What is it: an apparition? A ghost? Just what?

I was alarmed. They couldn’t give me more details beyond — shadow. Fast as a flash. Disappeared.

I checked on Wiki and the wise people of Quora. Articles mentioned how coming out from under the sun can cause people to see and imagine they have seen whatever.

I had to stop reading when the other articles were asking me to register for some ghost reading and the like.

I was hesitant to believe my daughter’s nanny and her friend but I also didn’t want to dismiss them too quickly.

That scream didn’t sound-- rehearsed…

Again, it is my house. I live here. If a ghost was sharing the apartment with me, I needed at least a heads-up. Not that I was desperate for an introduction… I don’t. Really, I do not.

I am the girl who after watching Sandra Bullock’s movie, birdbox, slept with the lights on in my bedroom for a whole year.

Also, as a sufferer of night terrors, trust me, I have more than enough to deal with.

But, am I to believe that these two young ladies were lying? What for? To what end?

In time, we all seemed to forget about the…ghost. Then I started having relatives come over, stay, and go. As it happens with having guests — some misplace things, some spoil things, some take what isn’t theirs.

So, I came up with “Nicholas”. Nicholas is the substitute name for every, “I don’t know” And “It wasn’t me”

Example 1:

A broken glass cup:

Everyone: “It wasn’t me”

Me: “So, Nicholas the ghost?”

Example 2:

Missing item:

Everyone: “I don’t know who took it”

Me: So…, “Nicholas the ghost?”

If the ghost existed, I do not think he would find that funny but this was how my home got its inside joke of the ghost of (a time called, ‘Saint’) Nicholas, was born. ‘Saint' because it says nothing and carries the blame for everything no one takes responsibility for.

Don’t ask why I chose the name, I no longer remember.

But, do ghosts exist?

These days when the house is quiet and I am going about my business, I think sometimes that something… someone has moved, passed behind me or beside me. I turn sharply.

“I won’t be scared”, I say to myself.

I cannot be scared. What did I do?

If it is a ghost, who did I kill?

Besides, I have a daughter who is full of energy. If I start running scared, what is she to do?

A shadow. I turn towards it — sharply. Nothing.

In the dark, at night, I keep my phone within reach so I can quickly turn on the torch. And many times, I put on the torch through most of the night…

A shadow. I turn on the light — quickly. Nothing. Yet…
