Food Review: Mia’s Brooklyn Bakery- Blackout Cake
Behold the luscious sumptuousness that is the blackout cake at Mia’s Brooklyn bakery in downtown Brooklyn at Smith Street.
I have sampled many sweet confections and the blackout cake is a knockout for some good reasons. My review will be based on a 3-point score for each point given to price, quality and quantity.
Quality
The blackout cake is described as a chocolate sponge, chocolate custard cake. It starts off with a layer of sponge and then alternates between the custard and sponge in equal parts.
The sponge cake is light and airy not too sweet. The custard in between the layers feels like its thicker than mousse but has a mousse like quality. It is consistent and spreads easily on your spoon or tongue.
Typically, with cakes that have some type of custard or cream it errs on the side of being too sugary.
This cake does not make that mistake and straddles the balance between having a smooth and firm texture and a satiating flavor. There is enough of chocolate to go all round to make each bite pack a punch and taste quite flavorful. 1 point for taste/quality.
Price
It costs $8.50. This in NYC my friends, and $8.50 is a very very good price. A cake of this quality costing under $10 is miraculous if not downright cheap. Manhattan prices would dictate that this sell for at least $10, if not $12. A full one point for price.
Quantity
A very good and healthy sized portion cake that I wiped off in 3 days. Again the quantity exceeded expectations. This cake will really be my go-to for special occasions and if I feel like indulging in a weekend binge.
My verdict:
3/3.
I literally cant think of anything I would like to improve on this dessert. Its for the serious chocolate lovers and the nonchalant. Make a visit to Mia’s Brooklyn Bakery and try this out!
