Harris Just ‘Became’ Black

Kamala Harris has never made any secrets or prevarications about her race or ethnicity.

Kamala Harris was born in Oakland, CA to immigrant parents. Her father is a Jamaican-born American economist who happens to be Black. Her mother was an American scientist who happened to be born in India. Kamala Harris has always self-identified as Black and South Asian.

While there has been reporting that her parents were not yet naturalized citizens when she was born, Kamala herself is a “natural-born” American citizen, born in Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center. Being born in an American hospital on American soil clearly accords Kamala Constitutional birthright citizenship, making her a natural-born citizen eligible for office.

Back in 2020, Trump wallowed in his favorite old trope of racist mudslinging birtherism

Trump’s attacks on her then were the same old racist poison as his birtherism movement against Obama. “Birtherism” is the malicious conspiracy theory that former President Obama was not actually born in the US. He attempted the same attacks against Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio when they were running against him in 2016 during the Republican primaries.

In 2020, at a press conference, Trump pushed the lie about Kamala, saying that “she doesn’t meet the requirements” to be vice president. He repeated the misinformation in a White House press conference. His premise was based on the fact that, though she was indisputably born on American soil, it was to immigrant parents who had not yet been naturalized as citizens at the time of her birth.

In the 2024 Republican Primary, Trump tried the same tactic against Nikki Haley, whose parents were not naturalized citizens before Nikki was born in Bamberg, South Carolina.

The so-called “anchor baby” argument came to Trump from John Eastman, a disgraced then-law professor and later an architect of the efforts to overturn the fair…
