Like many this summer, my Medium stats have tanked. I’ll be lucky to meet the $50.00 mark this month. This is three times less than my highest earnings month last October.

I’ve been working hard to try and figure out why. And I’ve come to some conclusions that I am going to share today.

Engagement

If you are a Medium writer, you already know that engagement is important — very important. Those in Medium administration want us to engage with each other, engage with those who read our work, and engage with those whose work we read.

If you aren’t a Medium writer, perhaps you don’t know the best way to engage. Claps, highlighting, and comments on the articles you read that feel deserving of your engagement are the ways to do it.

Of those, comments are the best, or so I’ve heard. I have claps and a fair amount of highlights but comments sometimes are few. I try to comment on a piece I’ve read that I easily connect with or whose writing has become a familiar piece of reading in my daily life.
