Who doesn’t love a good sandwich? Apparently, our skin does too.

Social media is a crazy place. Something is always trending. Sometimes it’s short wave and other times, it could stick around and even become a culture.

The skin care industry has been having an amazing run, thanks to social media. New practices are coming up every day and It’s hard to keep up with all the terms in the skin care industry. Some are even unique to certain social media platforms. For instance, the moisture sandwich method originated from Reddit and it has spread to TikTok and Instagram like wildfire.

The original moisture sandwich method from Reddit refers to a method of applying skincare products to achieve a better result. It involves layering your skin with a lighter product and then coating it with a heavier product.

Reddit users suggest that you first wash your face or spray a face mist, then apply a lighter product like a serum while the face is still wet and coat it with a heavier product, which can be a moisturizer or petroleum jelly (for dry skin).

Water/mist — serum — moisturizer/ petroleum jelly

But, some modifications have been made to the method. There are now sandwich methods for retinol. which includes binding your active product like retinol in between two layers of moisturizer (just like using two layers of bread to secure your tomatoes and other ingredients better). You start with dampening your face with a mist or water, then go in with your serum, layer it with your moisturizer, then apply your retinol and coat it with another layer of moisturizer… Voila!

Water/ mist — serum — moisturizer — retinol — moisturizer

The purpose of the sandwich method is to lock hydration into the skin.

It makes sense scientifically too, you start with a lighter product and then build up to the heavier one, which leads to better absorption of the products, hydrated skin, and glowing skin.

Who is this method for?

It’s suitable for all skin types. Be it dry, sensitive, or oily. But, if you have oily skin or your face is prone to acne, it’s better to use a lighter moisturizer as your heavier product. Using a jelly or heavy moisturizer as your heavy product will result in clogged pores and acne. It’s bad news. So, the better option is a light moisturizer.

Frequency of usage

This method is safe to practice daily, especially if you have dry skin. You can adopt the method every time you apply your skin care products. Mainly morning and night

Benefits of the moisture sandwich method

  1. It helps to keep the skin hydrated

2. It helps the skin's complexion

3. It results in glowing skin

4. It helps the products absorb better into the skin

Note:

You can also use the moisture sandwich method for your lip and your body.

For the lip: Dampen the lip, layer with a moisturizer, and coat with a lip balm

For the body: Oil your body immediately after a bath without drying, then coat it with your moisturizing lotion.

Good luck with feeding your skin some juicy and healthy sandwich.
