For anybody who travels, it’s a given that Hop-on, Hop-off bus tours are an essential tool for the traveller, a necessity. Mo and I have been travelling to a wide variety of destinations over the years, and a favourite way of exploring the cities has been the open, top decks of double-decker buses.

There’s no way I could tell you how many times because we’ve lost count. All I can say to you is we’ve suffered heat stroke and exhaustion during a New York heat wave. We’ve suffered drenching in York and London, suffered frozen balls in Scandinavia, been sunburnt in Rome, Athens and Istanbul — our list seems endless.

Our latest experience of the Hop-on, Hop-off concept was to be unique and unlike anything we’ve enjoyed so far. At this cruise port, the destination for most of the two thousand-odd passengers was the wonderful city of Rome.

We’ve been to Rome many times over the years and decided this time to forgo the pleasures of the long hike from the port of Civitavecchia into Rome. Let’s be honest — how many times can a person bear standing outside the Colosseum inspecting pretend Roman soldiers with knobbly knees and imitation swords?

As a writer, I’ve never been happy being pigeonholed because there’s so much to write about & too little time to do it. So, seize the day is my motto.
