It’s just me. Hi. I’m not the problem. It’s me. — picture taken by Rachel Adams

I have blue hair because blue has become one of my favorite colors over the years — especially when boosted by some deep reds and golds. Because I do a lot of time on the internet (yes, I meant to say it that way), I’ve noticed an uptick in vitriol focused on those of us who have colored our hair in non-natural colors.

To be fair, I get a lot of compliments on my hairstyle and its color. I want that to be known.

However, hearing and reading how people judge it — any woman — who dyes their hair in bright colors really got me wondering where all of this comes from.

Before you decide to get your hair dyed anything but a natural color, there are some things to keep in mind.

Does having blue (non-natural) mean you’re more liberal or leftist?

Non-conforming hair colors and hairstyles are ascribed to those in anti-authority or socially progressive movements. Hair color specifically became a method of marking people as “SJWs” (social justice warriors).

Blue is also a liberal color. For instance, I’m a blue voter in a red state. Right, or conservatives will choose to label any blue-haired girl as a meme for what they think are stupid/radical/asinine ideas…
