How a dog healed my heart
I was listening to a book recently by Pete Walker called ‘CPTSD- From Surviving to Thriving.’ In the book, he talked about having a pet for people who have been traumatized from childhood and have a difficult time seeking and maintaining relationships.
I am a human who has had two kids who are older now and a pet rabbit for the last eight years. I have always scoffed that I am not a dog person and thanked my lucky stars it was not me bending over to clean up a poop pile with my little green bag.
Randomly and somewhat impulsively after hearing that suggestion in the book I searched the Pet Finder website and looked to see if there were any dogs near me needing a home. My teenage son has been told most of his life that we couldn’t get a dog. His birthday was the next week and I would have honestly never thought this would be happening, but as I searched a rescue site near my house in Minneapolis I scrolled down to find the cutest little pup with such a sad story!
This little guy was all black with tiny legs and the biggest pointy ears. According to his bio, he was a shepherd mix who three larger dogs had attacked as a six-week-old puppy on a reservation.
