Earlier today, President Biden announced he was no longer seeking re-election. Instead, he urged his delegates to support his Vice President, Kamala Harris.

In retrospect, this news will have seemed inevitable. The latest polls showed as much as two-thirds of the electorate wanted Biden to drop out. Other polls showed Biden trailing Trump in key swing states, and concerns about Biden’s fitness for office were starting to bleed over into down-ballot races, creating the possibility that Republicans might also win control of Congress.

But I think it’s important to understand that there was nothing inevitable about what happened today. An incumbent President has declined to seek a second term only six times in our nation’s history. The most recent was Lyndon Johnson in 1968.

No sooner had Biden announced his intentions, than Trump and his media surrogates started spinning the news as proof that Biden was the “worst President” in U.S. history and that the Dems had decided to throw him overboard because they finally realized what a disaster he was.

Balderdash!
