“It’s His Opinion”

What Harrison Butker did wasn’t just give an opinion

Likely, you’ve heard by now at least some of the misogynistic, homophobic comments Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave at a small Kansas Catholic university:

“I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

There are plenty of people coming to his defense, stating that Butker was merely expressing his opinion, as opposed to giving a wholly inappropriate, bigoted speech during a college graduation.

You know how I know it’s bigotry and not “just an opinion”? Reverse the situation — imagine a professional female athlete giving a similarly public, misandrist speech at a college graduation, insulting half the graduating class of young men, and half the audience. Would she still have her cush job as a professional athlete the next day? Not on your life.

Yet many folks want to continue to perpetuate, and even reward, public bigotry toward women with zero consequences. The double standard is exhausting.
