It’s Time for “Monetize Everything” to Die
Passion should be pursued, whether it is profitable or not
I used to write for fun.
There was a time in my life where I experimented with different styles of writing, wrote stories, outlined novels, and generally wrote because I wanted to.
At one point in high school I was published so frequently in the local newspaper’s “20 below” column that people joked I should just take it over.
It was a way for me to take my thoughts out of my head, put them on paper, and organize them in ways that made sense for me.
I never expected anyone to read my poetry (and I’m not sure I would WANT anyone to now), there was no expectation of ever writing the next great novel, and while I enjoyed the novelty of being published in the newspaper, that was just a nice side effect of writing down my opinions in ways that other people agreed (or disagreed) with.
It was a more innocent time, that quarter-century ago. Not only for me because I was still a teenager living at home with my parents, but for the world in general.
Life was still affordable.
Wages hadn’t stagnated.
The average house in Canada cost less than $175,000.
