“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” is the old proverb highlighted in The Shining, repeated enough to become ominous and spooky.

Evidently, repetition can change the meaning of words from fun and light to essentially their own opposites. Let's try it —

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

Did that work? Probably at least a little since you’ll automatically include some carry-over from King. Three times is probably more than enough to do it with that value-added boost from The Shining.

So when I woke up this morning, for some strange reason, my mind wandered to Jack and his boring self. Yes, his phrase opened my day, though it quickly morphed into this —

“Her runny nose and sore throat make Aurelia a sick girl.”

Yeah, I woke up with some kind of crud. I didn’t even get to slowly slide into it, just BOOM. What was the connection to Jack? I have no idea. Whatever issues with being too serious, Jack had made…
