My 5-year-old Son is an Environmental Activist

I was as amazed as you when I found out

“Papa, why is there a pile of trash outside that house?”

My son questioned me as we sat on our balcony. We’d newly installed an extra layer of glass rail to secure our balcony for our young kids — especially my 1-year-old daughter.

Thanks to that added security, I wasn’t constantly watching my 5-year-old son, Naman, and was caught by surprise.

“What trash are you talking about?” I enquired.

He pointed at a distance towards the gate of a house farther down our street.

“There, that one. Why do people throw trash on the street?” His tone was now very agitated. He can get very annoyed and, in turn, angrily loud quite easily.

I figured this wasn’t a matter to be ignored, so I turned my full attention to him.

I tried to calm him down saying, “Yes, Naman. People shouldn’t do that — they should use the garbage bin and not dirty the streets.”

He wasn’t in the mood for actionless statements.

He grabbed my arm and urged me to get inside the house, “Come, I want to make something.”

As we walked in, he walked over to his stationery cupboard and pulled out one of his pastel sheets and some sketch pens.

“How do you spell throw? Is this correct?”
