The genesis of the downfall of American democracy
The three rules of PR as taught by Roy Cohn to Donald Trump —
- Attack! Attack! Attack!
- Admit nothing and deny everything.
- No matter what happens you claim victory and never admit defeat. You have to be willing to do anything to anyone.
Roy Cohn was a notoriously cutthroat American attorney and power broker who worked on anti-communist investigations during the Army–McCarthy hearings. He became even more notorious as a political fixer in NYC during the 70s and 80s, and he took Donald Trump under his wing when Trump was just starting in business.
Following McCarthy’s fall, Cohn’s reputation declined, and in 1986, the authorities disbarred him for unethical conduct, which included trying to alter a dying client’s will in his favour. Cohn died shortly afterward from AIDS-related complications, having denied his HIV status.
