On July 1st, 2024, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that ex-Presidents have absolute immunity from charges pertaining to their official duties while in office.

Thankfully they did not take the step of giving blanket immunity for all actions, so they stopped one half-step short of declaring their full support for authoritarianism.

At least, not on paper. They’ve certainly displayed it with their behavior.

What they did do is just as catastrophic for our current moment in history; they declared that it is ‘up to the lower courts’ to rule on how this decree applies to Donald J. Trump, and the case against him for insurrection.

What this means is that they’ve kicked the ball down the line to somebody else, and ensured that there’s no way Trump will go on trial for his alleged insurrection and election interference before the election.

They have — not on paper, but in practice — granted him a free ride, in hopes that he’ll beat Joe Biden and be given Presidential immunity again.
