No, Zoomers and Alphas Aren’t ‘Ruining’ Scrabble

Ever since grade school, I’ve been a sucker for a good game of Scrabble. I’m generally not a very competitive person. However, this classic board game brings out a dormant thirst for competition from within me.

I love the brain power required to construct words in strategic formations. I savor the challenge of scoring manifold points for creating those words. And I build up an insatiable desire to accumulate the highest score I possibly can.

But, once again, people have shown their propensity to take something that should be extremely simple and straightforward…and then use it as an excuse to generate unnecessary drama.

The Issue

A new version of Scrabble has been introduced. Presently available only in Europe, “Scrabble Together” scraps the individualized gameplay of traditional Scrabble.

Instead, participants compete in teams. They must complete twenty challenges or prompts (drawn from a card) in order to win. As reported by pop culture journalist Adam Downer, Mattel has said they came up with this idea in order to accommodate people who might feel too intimidated to play…
