I wish that everyone’s childhood could be as simple and innocent in real life as the ones we often see depicted in shows and movies.

Romping through the woods with friends, soccer games after school. Getting ice cream and playing at the park. Being little scamps in the classroom with a patient, tolerant teacher smiling at everyone’s antics.

Unfortunately, real life is often not as rosy as what the silver screen portrays.

There are a lot of ways in which a child’s life can take a wrong turn. The loss of a happy, carefree childhood is a terrible theft with long-lasting consequences on mental health and future success.

Considering how often the refrain of ‘protect the children’ is used as a rallying cry in today’s politics, you’d think we would all be able to agree on this one thing. Kids should be allowed to be kids, not treated as short adults.

So then why in the world are we trying to put them back in the workforce?
