Oh, Walt, It’s Not You — It’s Just Disney
A letter to a fallen kingdom’s great king
To Mr. Walt Disney:
Once the name Disney brought forth magic and prestige to the world of art and entertainment; now, I’m afraid the empire that bears your name has tarnished it, and like Jack Skellington’s Christmas, has become something that wasn’t meant to be. But unlike Mr. Skellington and his holiday ambitions, this tragedy lacks spirit and has very little to no redemption in its contemporary characterization. Do not be misled by my words — Disney’s still an empire but is only an enterprise of corporation as opposed to that of artistic merit.
The spirit of Disney, the true spirit, I believe, is dead, but the body still lives on. Disney, as with any entertainment company, has always had a place for business. Business, its proceedings, its sacrifices, and rewards are always inevitable motions that keep the blood of the industry flowing, but when it comes to an enterprise dedicated to the arts and entertainment especially, the business should never be the heart of it. It’s the magic, it’s the art, it’s the stories that need to be at the heart of it all!
May I now illustrate to you the direness of the Disney brand by pointing out the reversal of this functioning?
