Over two decades ago, I had the chance to celebrate my 20th birthday in a way that not many people choose to do — surrounded by extended family in a foreign country while experiencing some of the best amusement and theme parks in the world.

I was never much of a partier, so being with people I loved and who loved me in return was just as interesting to me as finding a bar to party at with friends.

We did a lot of stuff on that trip.

So much so that I can’t really remember it all through the haze of two decades of accumulated memories.

I do know that I had some cringey moments as a very awkward 20-year-old. There’s more than a few things that I would change about that trip if I could do it all over again.

But those aren’t the things that stand out for me about that trip, and it’s not the grand spectacular things that stand out for me either. We certainly had our share of those between Disney and Universal — both of which were solid trips even back then.

What I do remember are those simple moments that refused to be ordinary…

Sharing a house and meals with 20 other people.
