Someone Told Me the Mainstream Media Is a Manipulative Leftwing Puppet Master
Who are the men behind the curtain?
Variations on the title above are a steady drumbeat on the right. Or more like a heartbeat — the day they stop bashing the media, it will mean the patient is dead. But even “moderates,” to the extent such people exist, pick it up too.
Unfortunately, the thinking behind it is very primitive.
The leftists are coming! The leftists are coming!
90% of conservative complaints about the “mainstream media” boil down to “they don’t agree with us.” But they aren’t entirely wrong — on average, journalists and the publications they work for tilt leftward.
So yes, the media is liberal. Ish.
Unicorns and the organized left
First, let’s dispense with the conspiracy angle. Anyone who’s been in a group of liberals or Democrats knows they can barely manage a pizza order. “Puppet master” is not on the menu.
