At a service appointment with my book Straight Shooter.

If you’ve been a sports fan for the past two decades (maybe longer), then at some point during your sports journey, you’ve heard of the explosive individual, Stephen A. Smith.

I’ve never forgotten the first time I saw him on TV.

It was during the summer of 2004. My family had left North Carolina and had moved to Texas to live with a woman who was my stepmom for three years.

Shirley Fragher was her name. My brother and I called her Ms. Shirley. She had cable TV at her beautiful house.

Having access to cable TV for the first time felt so good! It was like gaining superpowers. I didn’t hesitate to go through the channels that were available on TV. The ESPN channels quickly became some of my favorites because they covered NBA basketball.

One day when I was watching ESPN at night, the channel showed several analysts talking to whoever they were talking to. Then this guy pops up on the screen with an interesting-looking fro, and he’s going OFF like a spirit possessed him.
