In honor of Halloween, I’ve decided to share a bit of the me “behind the mask.” Here goes.

One.

As a small child, I once asked my father “what is middle age?” and he told me it was twenty-six. I didn’t realize he was kidding until I was about twenty-six. I am still aspiring to reach this level of smartassness.

Two.

At that early age, I had no siblings, just imaginary friends. My mother was worried that I was nuts. She took me to a child psychologist who told her I was an intelligent, imaginative, perfectly normal child. What if the psychologist’s professional skills were only mediocre and she was only right 66% of the time?

Three.

When I was five, I went on vacation with my great-grandfather, Ira Van Wyngarden, to fish in Minnesota along with two uncles and my mom and dad. Ira was the son of Dutch immigrants and sometimes said things in ways we would find unusual. He referred to children like me as “wee ones.”

On one day of the trip, I managed to hook a fish that nearly pulled me into the lake. I don’t remember who helped me finally land it, but he laughed heartily at the “wee one/wee girl” pulling in a “lunker.” It…
