The Importance of “Amor fati”

It was a few weeks ago, on one of the many podcasts I listen to, that I heard somebody mention the Latin phrase “Amor fati.” Literally translated, it is “Love fate.”

As a means of explaining the true meaning of these two words, it makes sense to get a bit wordier than that, so we can fully understand this sage advice that tells us,

“This is what you’ve got. Embrace it. Love it. Deal with it. A guaranteed way to invite misery into your life is to fight against the reality of a situation that you cannot change.”

We would do well to pay attention to this!

First the art and then the essay

I commonly picture words in my head when I hear them for the first time. In this case, once I realized that there were four letters in each word, I decided to set out to paint the canvas that you see at the top of this piece.

Once I completed the work and I began showing it to people, I have been explaining its significance to me, which is what led me to put it in writing to share here.
