The Real Villain of The Devil Wears Prada
For so long, I’ve disagreed with director David Frankel saying Nate is not the villain of this film.
I don’t like Nate. He’s unsupportive and I don’t see his sarcasm as loving humor. For example, we’re introduced to Nate when Andy is telling him she got a job at a fashion magazine. His response is, “What was it, a phone interview?”
Um, rude? I also believe he has some issues with his girlfriend being more successful than him at work. He’s emotionally immature and not great at articulating his insecurities or feelings. Consequentially, his pride gets the best of him in most moments with him and Andy.
I watched The Devil Wears Prada tonight on a whim once again. Going into tonight’s viewing of it, I had a dead-set opinion of believing Nate was the villain of the movie.
Of course, it’s not Miranda. She is a powerhouse editor-in-chief who is fierce, her haircut is timeless, and it’s Meryl fricking Streep. Miranda loves what she does, and it shows. She curates pieces from collections until what hasn’t been discovered already can be shown to the world as “this is what’s current, bitches”. Isn’t that what an editor-in-chief is supposed to do?
