This Is Why I’m Learning Assamese
Assam is a fascinating state in northeast India
India is a large and diverse country, and I’m starting to understand its complexity.
Assam is an Indian state in the northeast of India.
I was introduced to the state of Assam in an online conversation.
My friend’s home is there, and his passion for Assam’s vibrant culture and traditions was immediately apparent.
It was difficult not to get swept up in his enthusiasm.
So I decided to learn not only about the people, places, festivals, traditions, culture, and their unity in diversity but also to try to understand the language.
I wanted to challenge myself to do something completely different, and I was fortunate to have the help of my Assamese friend as I started this project.
My goal is to have a conversation in his language with him.
Language
I’m not naturally good with languages other than my native English.
I know French because I lived there part-time for many years and always tried to immerse myself in the traditions and culture.
I will do the same as I navigate the Assamese language.
But, I soon discovered that Assamese was not as accessible to learn as French.
I found and purchased two apps that, unfortunately, lacked quality and style, so my friend stepped in to help me.
He is an excellent instructor who patiently translates sentences into his language for me.
It helps that his English is outstanding for a non-native English speaker; he’s an accomplished writer, and his passion is poetry, the starting point of our friendship.
I’ve started listening to Assamese music on YouTube to appreciate how the words sound and to try to identify them.
Often, the lyrics of the songs are displayed on the screen, which is a help.
Respect
The advantage of having my friend as a tutor is that I can learn about the culture in a way that an app can’t convey and isn’t designed to deliver.
I now appreciate the role respect plays in Indian life.
It permeates through everything from culture to tradition, family, and language.
I now know that words must be delivered appropriately and with respect.
It’s not sufficient to have a command of the language; it’s also essential to consider the audience and address them appropriately.
I would miss this important step without help.
Beautiful Assam
I’m privileged to be learning about more than just the Assamese language.
There is much to know about this impressive state.
I want to become familiar with the culture and traditions, appreciate the diversity and unity of its people, and learn more about the festivals, religion, city life, countryside and lifestyle.
I know this will be possible because I’ve already been introduced to some aspects.
Assamese people are intensely proud of their motherland and take every opportunity to share their joy about living in this incredible Indian state.
I’m looking forward to learning more.
