Transparency is Not a Bad Thing
We need to move past “competitive secrecy” in essential goods and services
One of the most fascinating things on the internet is that little corner where people go to share the things they can reveal now that they’re no longer bound by secrecy clauses or non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).
Some of them are silly and ridiculous, like using paid actors as “fans” at film premieres.
Some of them are scary and dangerous, with stories of hit lists and rape.
And some of them…well some of them are just stupid.
- A restaurant using a common ingredient in their tuna salad…
- Distribution Center/Warehouse employees knowing about specials weeks or months ahead of time…
- Planned obsolescence in technology…
Things that aren’t really important to be included in an NDA, but are anyways because of the need for “secrecy”.
Only, the truth is that there are very few things that need to be kept “secret”, and many of those things would be vastly improved by ending the ridiculous practice of “competitive secrecy”.
Companies need to stop keeping secrets to protect their bottom line — especially when it comes to the necessities of life.
