Two Days Into Primary School, My Son Met His First Bully

I think he’s learning to handle it, but I can’t be sure

I’ll gladly admit that most of my worries for my son’s foray into primary school were just that — a father’s worries.

Most of them didn’t materialize. He knows his way to his school. He feels a bit anxious about all the morning crowds at the staircase when everyone is rushing to class.

He does still part-cry, part-control his feelings when seeing me off at the school gate.

But each day when I pick him up from his class, he’s got a smile on his face, and his day has mostly been “great.”

It is only when we get into the details of the day that some slightly worrisome facts usually come out.

For example, on the first day, the guy he sat next to somehow decided to hit my son on the head with a water bottle. It also came with a warning — “I’ll crack your head open.”

The Hindi version of it sounds a lot milder — but that’s the literal translation.

My son was naturally upset, but I told him that maybe that’s what the other child hears and sees at home, and doesn’t realize it isn’t the right thing to do, so don’t worry about it. Y
