Voting is Not an A la Carte Menu
In the last several elections, I’ve noticed the exact same disturbing phenomenon in both my home state of Kansas, and Missouri, which is right next door to us, since we live near Kansas City.
The phenomenon is this: Both in Kansas and Missouri, which are red states, when the issue of abortion comes up on the ballot, voters overwhelmingly vote to keep abortion legal, which is great.
The problem is, both states also vote the exact same far-right extremists back into their state legislatures, ensuring the fight over abortion rights continues unabated.
Millions of Americans vote this way, as if they can pick and choose the issues and politicians will enact what they want — even if that goes against the entire party’s platform.
But that’s not how things work in real life. The Republican Party has stated again and again, in writing, that they are antichoice. It is part of their official platform. Republican Party politicians have demonstrated, again and again, that when it comes to abortion, they don’t care what their constituents want. They will restrict abortion every chance they get, no matter how loudly the people protest it.
When I ask conservatives why they keep voting for policies they don’t like, they often reply something to the effect that they don’t vote for those policies. It’s…
