We’re Intentionally Stunting the Minds and Bodies of Our Kids

A father’s concern for the future of his children

My son recently started primary school. Even as adults, it can be quite daunting to adjust to a new environment, imagine how hard it is for a five-year-old.

I am glad, however, that the first few days are behind him, and it should only get better from here.

I still remember my school days quite clearly, like it was yesterday.

There is a healthy mix of good, and not-so-good memories, but as an adult I can see how each of them had their own unique learnings.

Having to deal with the bullies, enjoying the thrill of learning, making new friends, dealing with the pressure of examinations, the first acquaintance with facial hair, going through a weird voice mutation, dealing with acne, and a whole host of other things.

Growing up was challenging, but fun. And most of us millennials and generations before probably dealt with it all on our own for the most part.

With our kids and today’s generations, however, things are very different.

Unfortunately, as a result of technology and other societal evolutions, in my view, we’ve probably gone the wrong way with how we raise our kids.
