What is a Tariff, Anyway?
So, it turns out many people don’t know how tariffs work. Let’s fix that.
I’m an artist—a professional jeweller. I’ve sold at craft sales, I’m a juried member of the local Craft Council, and I’m working on building up the inventory and infrastructure to take my business online.
I know a thing or two about sourcing materials, budgeting, and pricing goods for sale. There’s a lot of math and accounting involved, which I hate, but it does need to be done.
I don’t have a degree in economics, but I have some experience in dealing with markets and weighing the price of goods and the costs of materials to make a profit.
My college years taught me how to turn my art into a business I could live off of. We had whole semesters dedicated to precisely that.
As somebody with these skills, surrounded by other small business owners who work in the same industry, I am horrified by the tariff plan proposed by the incoming administration in the United States.
But what frightens me more is the number of people who seem to think it’s a good idea. And when you ask them questions and scratch the surface of their thinking, you find out a shocking truth:
