Where Are the Men Who Are Not Threatened by Powerful Women?

From 1965 to 2005, from my ages of 18 to 58 years old, I spent those forty years in milieus that were dominated by women. As a result of my experiences in these arenas, I have found it natural not only to work with and socialize with strong and capable women but to be led by them, thus leading to my understanding that women are more than worthy as work partners, visionaries, and leaders.

It began in college

After graduating from high school, I began my college studies at a school that had historically been a teachers’ college. Because I was going to be a teacher, a field dominated by women, the ratio of women to men at my school was 2:1.

“Two girls for every boy,” as Jan and Dean sang in their hit song “Surf City.”

Teaching for 34 years

Following my college graduation, I taught in urban public schools from 1969–2003. While the ratio of women to men was a bit more balanced during my first four years of teaching at the junior high school level, that changed significantly for my remaining thirty years, when I taught in elementary schools.
