If you haven’t heard, 2024 YR4 has one of the highest likelihoods of a spectacular impact in ways that will create problems and potential destruction affecting life as we know it on Earth. Maybe that’s why scientists are considering the use of a nuclear weapon in space, with the hopes of deflecting the skyscraper-sized threat to our closest neighbor in the stars. Besides the possibility of seeing a new and massive scar on the moon and watching the skies to see the explosion of a nuclear weapon, other factors have the scientific community buzzing about this event.

2024 YR4

Discovered on December 27, 2024, 2024 was found by the ATLAS system in Chile. The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System sounded the alarms, and by February of this year, it was given a 3.1% risk of impacting Earth. Fortunately, as we’re not ready for this, and the governments of Earth aren’t working well together, an impact with Earth has been ruled out.

Why then are some considering the use of nuclear weapons?
