Why Do The News Outlets Sensationalize Stupidity?

We need more gatekeeping on promoting common sense, not the other way around

Two nights in a row our local news outlets showed a story of a woman calling 911 from out of state to send an ambulance to her aunt’s house in Wisconsin who texted that she was watching the Green Bay Packers football team lose and was having a heart attack.

Her niece went into hysterics and tried to call her aunt back but could not reach her — so she called 911 to dispatch an ambulance to the aunt’s address.

The aunt was just arriving home from being at someone else’s house for the game. An ambulance arrived too.

Well, there was no heart attack — just a poor choice of words, a losing football team, and two not-very-smart women.

Why do the media outlets think this is a story?

As former healthcare professionals who dealt with emergencies, my husband and I thought the coverage of this story was in very poor taste. And to make matters worse, we saw it on one network Friday night and another network Saturday night — with the same footage.
