My late husband and I were friends and baseball buddies for fourteen years before we officially started dating. Once we overcame the initial emotional challenges, our romantic relationship moved forward pretty quickly.

We were co-workers in the retention department of the Star Tribune newspaper. For those unfamiliar with a newspaper, it’s a large paper booklet with the news printed on it. In the old days, most people got them delivered to their door every day.

Now, you can go for an early morning walk and not spot a newspaper for miles. So, six months into our dating experience, our department was outsourced to save money.

The good news was that we were given generous severance packages and a forced vacation. Judd asked me if I wanted to go on a trip with him, and I immediately said yes. I suggested San Francisco, and initially, he seemed on board with it.

Then, the next day, he broached the idea of Puerto Vallarta since he already had a trip scheduled. Well, if nothing else, I thought it would be much warmer than Minnesota. So, we tweaked his plans (which I set up for him before our relationship…
