Is the YMCA Taking Care of Its Employees?

I feel bad for them

How would you feel if you were faced with employees on the other side of the glass-walled gym, eating snacks while surfing on their phones, while you huffed and puffed your way to peak physical fitness?

Here’s how the story goes.

I’ve been going to a YMCA location near me a lot lately. It’s not an Equinox, but I frankly don’t care. It has all the basics, it’s clean, and as a bonus, it has none of the buff and toned clientele who usually preen themselves in the mirror while lifting 100 lb weights. What’s not to like?

My favorite thing to do is to torture myself on the stair stepper, which always seems like a good idea in the beginning, but leaves me wishing I’d never gotten on it while I longingly stare at an ‘easier’ elliptical. I hope I am rewarded with svelte and toned thighs in the long run.

While trudging up the simulated staircase leading to nowhere, I’ve been noticing how the employees at the front desk of my local Y sit there motionless, staring into a computer. The only exercise they seem to get is a trip to the restroom or to the vending machines.

Granted, this is typical of most office jobs. However, this is a gym, promoting the importance of movement in our lives…
